[Hand-colored photograph of a Seated Woman]. Japan, Meiji Era.

$125.00

[Japan]. Circa 1900.

Hand-colored albumen print, mounted to cardstock. Two pieces of white tissue adhered to upper margin. CONDITION: Good, short chip to upper left corner of image, paper curled, minimal creasing at margins

An intimate view of a Japanese woman applying her cosmetics, decorated with delicate hand-colored accents.

This image shows a woman posing for her photograph while dressed in a kimono and seated before a mirror. The scenery is highly suggestive that this photograph presents a woman from a middle-class background, as she can be seen brushing her mid-length black hair, in front of a portable bureau that holds an exposed neckerchief and next to what appears to be a jewelry case. Alongside the subject, the hand-colored accents of the potted plant, paired with the pink flowers at the left-side of the panel of Mount Fuji, suggest that this picture captures a moment from the Meiji Era (1862–1912), at which time Japan was opening up to Western technology and consumer-culture. The photograph was likely to have been taken by a vernacular Japanese cameraman, and distributed as a collectible to Anglo-European or American travelers.
